Woven baskets are used for a variety of different reasons from storage to organization, from ornamental to design features. Not only will you find woven baskets in just about any room in the home, you’ll find them just about anywhere both indoors and out.
Woven baskets come in a variety of styles including:-
- Coiled basketry using grasses and rushes
- Plaiting basketry using materials that are ribbon-like, such as palms, yucca and flax
- Twining basketry using materials from roots and bark.
- Wicker basketry using reed, can, willow, oak and ash
The most popular styles of weaving in the US include Nantucket and Williamsburg. Nantucket baskets tend to be more large and bulky while Williamsburg are virtually any size. Although wicker is the common term for many of the reed type material used in basketry, wicker can often consist of more exotic materials such as seagrass, willow and bamboo.
While woven baskets have been around for over 10,000 years, they are as useful now as they were all that time ago. Finding the right style for your laundry basket, your fruit basket, for gift baskets or just for storage is easier than it has ever been. We even use them on our bicycles to carry goods home from the store. For the ideal gift, consider purchasing a handmade basket from some distant land and support the artist and their families.
